Choir in the Dial Project - Lutruwita Art Orchestra

Choir in the Dial Project: Seeks to highlight the incredible value of the Dial Ranges, an ecologically and culturally significant landmark near to Lutruwita’s North West Coast. Members of the Lutruwita Art Orchestra (LAO) will collaborate with the local community who live and work in and around the Dial to create a new experimental musical work that celebrates connection with Country and helps to highlight the ongoing campaign to save the forest from destructive logging practices. The work will be joyful and full of hope, and deeply connected to this moment in time and place.

Members of the LAO will venture into the forest with a choir made up of local musicians and singers (even those who don’t self-identify as ‘musicians’) to perform the work collaboratively with Country. This won’t be so much a ‘performance’ as a ‘musical ceremony’. This ceremony will be filmed and recorded by internationally recognised videographer. This film and video (along with interviews with key locals connected to the Dial) will be available for local organisations to use to help bring attention to the Dial and the fight to save it. Ultimately the LAO will perform live with the video and recording at the Beaker Street Festival in Nipaluna (Hobart) in 2027, with plans to tour the work to the North West Coast soon after. We are currently in the process of connecting with folks who may be keen to be involved in both the co-writing process and performance process, along with helping to connect us with other interested locals who might like to be part of the project.

Representatives of the LAO will be coming up to the Dial Range and surrounds from the 25th-27th of September to gain inspiration to compose a song. They would love to meet with any one who has an interest in protecting the Dial and the Choir in the Dial Project.
