What images come to mind if you think about the Country Women’s Association (CWA)? Nanas, scones and knitting?
Well, that’s partly true, but at the CWA in Tasmania Online Branch we like to do things a little differently.
We embrace, as our name suggests, the online space as part of our primary goal, that of sustainability. We welcome members from around the state who can join meetings and have social interaction without burning fuel. We focus local on food security through initiatives such as making preserves using seasonal produce, which we are able to donate to organisations such as the UTAS Inveresk Community Sharing Shed.
We have participated in the Community Fruit Loops program which sourced and planted fruit trees. This year we will support the Tasmanian Arboretum, as a carbon offset for the greenhouses gases we all produce. We focus international through our support of organisations such as the She Rises Project, Kenya, which assists new mothers, and KIVA, supporting women in micro-agribusinesses Oceania.
We share knowledge and skills, and yes, that includes both scone-making and knitting: “nana technology”!
We do meet in person several times a year as we acknowledge that just meeting online has some limitations. We share those “nana skills”, celebrate days such as “Women Walk the World”, and have a big birthday high tea in December.
We meet on the second Monday of the month, February to November, at 7.30pm, via Zoom. We can be contacted at cwaintasmaniaonlinebranch@gmail.com and always welcome new members. Being a member of the Online Branch also includes membership of the CWA in Tasmania state-wide organisation. You can also follow us on Instagram #cwatasonline or on Facebook, @cwatasonline.
You can also see us this year again at EcoFest. The Online Branch will have a stall on Saturday 11th April 2026 where we will be selling baked goods, preserves and some of our handcrafts.
We are running a workshop on turning scrap paper into beautiful handmade papers, suitable for card-making, letter writing, or craft and hope to see you there!
You'll find us in the Dining Hall at Camp Clayton!
